The Chief Secretary’s Building, formally known as The Colonial Secretary’s and NSW Public Works’ Offices is located at 121 Macquarie Street Sydney. The building was designed by the Government Architect’s and constructed in the 1860’s.

The building is regarded as highly significant and is listed on the State Heritage Register under the NSW Heritage Act, 1977, and on Schedule 5 of the Sydney Local Environmental Plan.

Due to the failure of numerous ceilings of existing lath and plaster, NSW Public Works were engaged to project manage the repair and re-painting of the ceilings. The intent of this project was to ensure that the repairs were completed to conserve the existing features.

Due to the significant heritage status of this building a highly refined strategic methodology was followed. This included cataloguing and removing all cultural artefacts from the rooms and then replacing them post works. Consulting with heritage architects, plasterers, paint experts and industry professionals to deliver this exquisite restoration.

These works were undertaken whilst the building was tenanted. Key to the successful outcome was managing the co-ordination between contractor and tenants to ensure minimal disruption and allow day to day operations to continue.
