Our team helps extinguish underground fire

Our team at NSW Public Works have once again showcased their expertise, assisting Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) to put out an underground fire on Kooragang Island in Newcastle.

PWA was engaged by FRNSW in February after an underground fire was detected burning beneath a 15-hectare industrial site on Kooragang Island.

The team was responsible for developing the preferred extinguishment methodologies, procuring supporting services and coordinating the civil works.

The project was complicated by adjacent environmentally sensitive areas, freight rail infrastructure and historic contamination. Close to 10 million litres of water was pumped from the Hunter River to aid in extinguishing the fire. The site was handed back to the owner on 17 April.
